Past Experience
I’ve been a professional hair stylist since 1990, but I’ve been accumulating experience in the field long before that. From internships to workshops, it’s taken commitment and dedication to reach where I am today and, through it all, my passion for helping clients look and feel their best never wavered. December 1997 - May 2003
Salon Azul,
Founder
Johan Roa founded Salon Azul on the Upper West side, Manhattan. He started to work on the new wave of defrizzing curly hair without using harsh chemicals such as formaldehyde, sodium hydroxide or lye.
May 2003 - February 2013
Master Hair Stylist, Paul Labrecque Hair Salon & Spa
Johan spent 10 years at Paul Labrecque Salon & Spa where he continued perfecting his MAVA anti-frizz treatment and developed his first shampoo and conditioner prototype. He continued developing better ways to manage curly and unruly hair.
April 2013 - to Present
MAVA Anti-Frizz Expert
Johan’s decade-long work on the MAVA Anti-Frizz Treatment led to a patent-pending breakthrough in 2025, expanding into a full care system with protective products, tutorials, and one-on-one client support.
