Born in Colombia, Johan is not only a hair guru but also deeply passionate about innovation in the beauty industry. With his 30 years of global expertise, he has become a master at taming frizz and transforming coarse, dry, or damaged hair into stunningly smooth and silky tresses. Johan's own Mava Anti-Frizz treatment, a groundbreaking and safe method, re-texturizes hair without the use of formaldehyde or other harsh chemicals. This approach yields remarkable, long-lasting results and simplifies home styling.
Over 14 years, Johan has developed the Mava hair care line, enhancing the longevity and effectiveness of his treatments. In 2019, he introduced Hydro Hair Therapy, a revolutionary treatment for bleached and color-treated hair, perfect for revitalizing frizzy, damaged hair. His Colombian heritage, combined with his passion for innovation, drives his continuous quest to redefine hair care standards with solutions that are safe, effective, and easy to maintain.

I’ve been a professional hair stylist since 1990, but I’ve been accumulating experience in the field long before that. From internships to workshops, it’s taken commitment and dedication to reach where I am today and, through it all, my passion for helping clients look and feel their best never wavered. December 1997Â - May 2003
Johan Roa founded Salon Azul on the Upper West side, Manhattan. He started to work on the new wave of defrizzing curly hair without using harsh chemicals such as formaldehyde, sodium hydroxide or lye.

Johan spent 10 years at Paul Labrecque Salon & Spa where he continued perfecting his MAVA anti-frizz treatment and developed his first shampoo and conditioner prototype. He continued developing better ways to manage curly and unruly hair.
April 2013 - to Present
Creator of MAVA Anti-Frizz Hair Treatment
Johan has spent the last decade perfecting MAVA Anti-Frizz treatment. He has added more protecting products to the process. He also added a post haircare line to protect hair and prolong the life of the treatment. He also added more educational tutorials for the maintenance of the treatment and a one on one follow up customer service.
